Practical tools to help you stay emotionally regulated between sessions
MINI GUIDES
GROUNDING AFTER A TOUGH DAY
When everything feels too much:
- 1. Step away from the noise.
- 2. Feel your feet on the floor.
- 3. Inhale deeply. Exhale twice as slow.
- 4. Name 3 things that are okay right now.
- 5. Remind yourself: “This moment will pass.”
- Reflection: “What does my body need right now - not my mind?”
REPAIRING AFTER CONFLICT
When things feel heavy between you and someone else:
- 1. Wait until both bodies are calm - not just both minds.
- 2. Use “I felt…” instead of “You always…”
- 3. Listen not to reply, but to understand.
- 4. Ask, “What would help you feel safer next time?”
- 5. End with a small gesture of care - a touch, an acknowledgement, a pause.
- Remember: Repair isn’t about being right; it’s about being real.
HOW TO RESPOND WHEN EMOTIONS OVERWHELM YOU
- 1. Pause before reacting.
- 2. Name what you’re feeling. (“This is sadness / fear / anger.”)
- 3. Locate it in your body - chest, throat, stomach.
- 4. Offer it breath instead of judgment.
- 5. Ask: “What is this feeling trying to protect or tell me?”
- Gentle Note: Every emotion is a messenger - not a mistake.
CREATING YOUR OWN CALMING SPACE
Your space doesn’t have to be perfect – only intentional.
Include:
- One sensory anchor (candle, stone, fabric)
- One grounding element (plant, water, natural light)
- One symbol of meaning (photo, quote, memory)
- Reflection Prompt: “What helps me feel safe enough to soften?”
Use this space when you feel scattered – to remind yourself that peace is a place you can return to, not find elsewhere.
